1. Garey Park to hold opening celebration June 9
The city of Georgetown will host a day full of events June 9 for the official opening of the 525-acre Garey Park at 6540 RM 2243, Georgetown. The park will open at 9 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Garey Park will remain open to visitors until 8 p.m. More details from the city are available here. Entry fees to Garey Park will also be waived for its first two weeks of operation, according to the city.
2. ‘The Daytripper’ celebrates 100th episode June 7 with downtown Georgetown street party
Emmy Award-winning travel show “The Daytripper,” hosted by Chet Garner, will host a downtown Georgetown street party from 7-9 p.m. June 7 on South Main Street to celebrate the show’s 100th episode. The free event will include live music, raffles and a meet-and-greet with Garner, who has served as the show’s host through its nine seasons. The 100th episode screening will begin about 8:30 p.m., after the sun goes down. Seating will be first come, first served. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Read more here.
3. Williamson County Historical Commission seeks new members
The Williamson County Historical Commission is seeking at least five new members.
Historical commission Chairwoman Eloise Brackenridge said she is looking to recruit individuals outside of Georgetown as the city is well represented in the commission. The historical commission meets on the second Thursday of every month. Interested applicants can reach out to their county commission representative for more information. Read more here.
4. Budget season underway for Georgetown ISD
Georgetown ISD is expected to publish a “Notice of Public Meeting to Discuss Budget and Proposed Tax Rate” with a summary of the proposed budget on district’s website by June 3, according to the district's 2018-19 Budget Guidelines. The school district is expected to host the public hearing on the budget and adopt it during their June 18 regular meeting.
5. 42 GISD students commit to play college sports
The athletics department at Georgetown ISD announced Thursday a total of 42 high school athletes have signed letters of intent to play college sports following graduation. A total of 29 students from Georgetown High School have committed to play 10 different sports at colleges throughout the U.S., including five Division I schools. From East View High School, 13 students signed to play college sports, one of them at a Division I school. See the full list here.
