Shoppers at H-E-B stores across Texas will be given one reusable shopping bag April 22 as part of the company’s celebration of Earth Day.

According to a news release, customers who visit any H-E-B, Central Market, Joe V’s Smart Shop and Mi Tienda in Texas are eligible to receive a complimentary Earth Day bag beginning at 1 p.m. The retail grocer has given out 3 million-plus reusable bags in celebration of Earth Day.

Company officials said H-E-B is launching a three-part series of collectible Earth Day bags over the next three years featuring state parks. This year, the bag’s design has a postcard design featuring Big Bend Ranch Texas State Park.

Representatives said distributing free reusable shopping bags on Earth Day is another demonstration of H-E-B’s dedication to promoting environmental sustainability.

H-E-B officials said the company earlier in April launched multiple initiatives meant to support decreasing plastic waste and offering sustainable alternatives for Texas shoppers.

Additionally, Texas students collected thousands of pounds of plastic bags as part of H-E-B’s annual School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge. The release states that, this year, a record-breaking 675 Texas schools collected more than 5 million plastic bags for the competition.

H-E-B officials lauded top schools in different regions of Texas in this year’s plastic bag recycling challenge.


In the San Antonio region, Rose Garden Elementary School in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD collected the most plastic bags, followed by Pleasanton Primary School and Fields Elementary School.
