Officials from the Austin Transportation Department will meet with District 10 residents in Northwest Austin to discuss three upcoming speed mitigation projects to install speed cushions.

The meeting is March 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Huffman Hall at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa Drive, Austin.

Residents can learn more about the speed cushions being proposed on Mesa Drive from First View Drive to Cross Valley Run, Hart Lane from Greystone Drive to Executive Center Drive and Mountainclimb Drive from Highland Hills Drive to Dry Creek Drive.

ATD staffers will update residents on those three projects, and residents will be able to ask questions about the Local Area Traffic Management program that installs speed mitigation efforts.

Speed cushions are black rubber devices installed in the street and differ from speed humps or bumps, which are typically made from concrete. Cushions are only installed if a resident makes a request and the department studies the area for the requested cushions and determines the devices are appropriate to help mitigate speeding.

Last summer, several residents complained to District 10 Council Member Alison Alter’s office over the installation of these cushions. That led her to met with ATD officials over the installation and notification process and halt the speed mitigation program. ATD made several changes to the program, which resumed in late summer.

In January, ATD removed speed cushions on Jester Boulevard just six months after they were installed because of resident complaints.
Other cushions proposed for installation that are funded include:

  • Yaupon Drive from Fittonia Drive to Spicewood Springs Road

  • Mount Bonnell Road from Fall Trail to West 35th Street

  • Denson Drive from North Lamar Boulevard to Airport Boulevard

  • Fairfield Drive from North Lamar to US 183
