RISD-news-reportRichardson ISD learned last week that a federal judge has approved its request to push its May school board election to November. The request was made to accommodate a recent change to RISD's electoral system that came in the wake of a settled lawsuit filed by former trustee David Tyson Jr. Under the new system, five of the district's school board members will be elected to represent specific geographic districts, while two will oversee the district as a whole. "This is the ruling we anticipated, and our next step will be to finalize a transition plan to our new 5-2 electoral system by Aug. 7," board President Justin Bono said in a press release. The terms of trustees Eron Linn, Karen Clardy and Katie Patterson are coming to a close this year, but it is unclear whether they will be able to run again. The board is in the midst of determining which of the newly minted districts should be up for election Nov. 5, according to the press release. Superintendent Jeannie Stone has expressed a desire to see District 4—one of two districts made up of a majority of voters who identify as a minority race—on the ballot. None of the current board members reside in that district.
