A sunflower sculpture was presented Thursday at 205 W. Louisiana St. at former Council Member Don Day's new building.

McKinney artist Jake Dobscha said it took him two weeks to finish the sculpture, which is made from Texas Leuders limestone. The sunflower weighs 600-700 pounds and is 4 feet by 4 feet, Dobscha said.

"[The scultpture] seemed a lot bigger when I was working on it," he said.

McKinney Mayor George Fuller said the art Dobscha has made is part of this community.

In 2016 Dobscha sculpted “The Watchdog” to honor the men and women in uniform within the city of McKinney. It was also commissioned by Day to put by a building at 230 E. Hunt St. The sculpture, made from Texas limestone, took two months to complete.

Dobscha also made a buffalo located at 206 S. Kentucky St. and an owl in front of the McKinney Chamber of Commerce building, 400 W. Virginia St.

The new downtown building, which is approximately 24,000 square feet, will be home to an extended-stay hotel, a 30-spot parking garage for building tenants, and retail and office space, including The Donut Kitchen. Day and his company, DFA LTD, are developing the new building.

Businesses are expected to move into the space in October with the construction on the building completed in November, Day said.
