New Braunfels ISD hires new chief of schools, head football coach, band director

New Braunfels ISD has hired new staff to occupy the Long Creek High School band director, head football coach and chief of schools positions in the district.

Matthew DeLoach has accepted the position as the district’s new chief of schools. Previously, DeLoach served as principal of Davenport High School and has 17 years of experience in public education.

“I am both thrilled and honored to accept this position at NBISD,” DeLoach said. “I look forward to the journey ahead and the positive impact we can create together. My wife, Lauren, and I have lived in the district since moving to Texas, and we are excited about living, working and educating our son, Elton, all in one place.”

The details

Adam Harvey has been named as the first head football coach and boys athletic coordinator at Long Creek High School. He spent the last two football seasons as the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach of Clemens High School, located in Schertz, according to a news release.

“As a proud New Braunfels resident and a firm believer in the excellence of NBISD, I am elated to be named the first head football coach and boys’ athletic coordinator for Long Creek High School,” Harvey said. “I am eager to enhance the new wave of achievement with the Dragons, while also embracing the rich traditions and successes of NBISD.”

Local districts to hold May elections

New Braunfels ISD and Comal ISD board of trustees will have positions on the May 4 election ballot.

In Comal ISD there will be three positions on the ballot: District 1, held by Tim Hennessee; District 2, held by Courtney Biasatti; and District 5, held by Michelle Ross. There are two trustee positions up for election in New Braunfels ISD on the May 4 ballot, including single-member District 3, currently held by President Eric Berquist and single-member District 5, which is currently held by Secretary Steve Minus. All positions serve three-year terms on the board.

The details

The Comal ISD board voted to call the election during a regular meeting Jan. 25. The New Braunfels board of trustees voted to call the election during the Jan. 8 regular meeting. Both districts are accepting applications for the positions until Feb. 16.

NBISD is also discussing a potential $313 million bond election for the May ballot, which would fund Phase 2 of the New Braunfels High School redesign, a competition stadium and track at Long Creek High School, and various other projects throughout the district.

“The reason we're calling it separate from the bond is, they really need to be separate ... the filing opens up middle of January for these positions, so we want to go ahead and get it out there,” NBISD Chief Financial Officer Paul McLarty said.

More information on applying to serve on the board of trustees can be found on the district’s website.

Comal ISD approves 2024-25 academic calendar

The 2024-25 academic calendar for Comal ISD students and staff has been approved by the Comal ISD board of trustees.

The District Education Improvement Council, campus administrators, support services staff, teachers, students and parents all gave their input on creating the academic calendar for next year.

A survey was also conducted that received over 5,000 responses, according to CISD Superintendent John Chapman III.

“One of the biggest things that we have to do as a school district is say, 'What is in the best interest of kids? What is in the best interest of making sure we cover [Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills]?'” Chapman said.
