Austin residents can receive a free tree during a March 7 event hosted by an area nonprofit.

TreeFolks, a local nonprofit whose mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through tree planting and care, will give away 500 1-gallon trees from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at 4000 Jackson Ave.

Residents can choose a maximum of two trees. The variety of trees to choose from includes Mexican buckeye, bald cypress, cedar elm, deciduous holly, Mexican white oak, Mexican plum and Texas redbud.

Planting trees directly combats drought and high summer temperatures, Nina Hawkins, communications director for TreeFolks, said.

TreeFolks said volunteers are needed March 7 to help distribute trees. More information on the tree giveaway or volunteer opportunities can be found by clicking here.
