Below are several resources voters may find useful before heading to the polls, including voter ID information and details about many of the positions on the ballot.

Texas Voter ID information

The following is a list of photo ID options according to the Texas Secretary of State that voters may find useful before heading to the polls.

What do the positions on the ballot do?

Texans will see a number of races on their ballot this November, from positions in the Texas Legislature to countywide positions. The following list explains what many of the positions are responsible for, according to the Texas Association of Counties.

County Judge

Presides over commissioners court; serves as head of emergency management; wide range of judicial and administrative duties.

County Commissioner

Represents one of four precincts within the county and is responsible for building and maintaining its roads and bridges; commissioners also adopt the county budget and tax rate; fill vacancies in elective and appointive offices; authorize contracts and set salaries and benefits.

District Attorney

Represents the state in prosecuting felony criminal cases; presents cases to a grand jury; works with law enforcement to investigate criminal cases.

County Treasurer

Serves as the chief custodian of the county's finances and is responsible for the safekeeping of said funds.

Sheriff

As a licensed peace officer, this position is responsible for enforcing criminal laws of the state; manages and operates the county jail; and enforces traffic laws.

Constable

As a licensed peace officer, this position issues trafic citations, serves warrants and serves as a bailiff for the justice of the peace court.

Tax Assessor-Collector

Calculates property tax rates for the county, collects taxes and other fees for the state and county.

Justice of the Peace

Presides over cases involving misdemeanors, small civil disputes and landord/tenant disputes; can perform marriage ceremonies; hears truancy cases.

County Auditor

Prepares accounting records for all county funds; audits records for county departments; serves as budget officer in certain counties.
