The extension of League City Parkway between Friendswood and League City reached a significant milestone as the expansion project was completed.

What happened

Officials from the cities of League City and Friendswood, as well as representatives from developer Hillwood Communities, convened at League City Parkway between Cones Lane and Friendswood Lakes Boulevard on the morning of July 15 to mark the parkway’s expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Community Impact previously reported Hillwood Communities partnered with League City to expand that 1/3-mile section that borders the developer’s new Legacy subdivision, which had its groundbreaking in March.

What they’re saying

Officials, such as Friendswood Mayor Mike Foreman, said they hoped the expanded roadway would relieve traffic congestion on FM 518 from drivers passing through Friendswood from Pearland to League City by providing an alternate route.

“This is an important east-west corridor for League City,” League City City Manager John Baumgartner said. “It goes all the way from Kemah and now on to Friendswood, and hopefully someday to Pearland.”

League City Mayor Nick Long echoed those sentiments and said the “arterial roadway” would also take stress off FM 646.

What’s next

Community Impact previously reported West Boulevard, which intersects with Friendswood Lakes Boulevard, will also be expanded at some point in the future. However, work on that may not be done for another year or more.
