Plano will add 1.6 miles to Breckinridge Trail, from Bradshaw Drive to Shiloh Road to provide a path to a future Dallas Area Rapid Transit Silver Line station, and improve access to off-street trails, according to city documents.

The gist

Plano City Council voted to award a roughly $800,000 contract to Beaumont-based contractor Schaumburg & Polk at an April 28 meeting to build the trail extension.

The project is completely funded by a federal grant, Plano Parks and Recreation Director Ron Smith said.

“No city of Plano tax would be used for this project,” Smith said.

The design process for the project is expected to start in May and last around 18 months. Construction on the trail is expected to start in mid-2027 and last one year.

Zooming in

The proposed trail would go over a jet fuel pipeline, Smith said, which adds complexity to planning and construction.

The project’s total cost, including construction, impact studies and additional requirements imposed by the federal government, is roughly $4 million, all of which is covered by the grant.

Quote of note

“When the federal government says ‘here’s an opportunity to do it tax-free from the city’s perspective,’ that’s probably a bet worth taking,” Smith said.
