Coppell residents dine out twice a week and want more options within the city, according to results from a city survey.

On July 23, officials reviewed results from the May survey that sought to identify residents' desired places to eat and shop, in addition to new offerings they hope to see in Coppell.

Staff commissioned OnPointe Insights to conduct the online retail survey and received 1,317 responses, Community Services Manager Katie Blust said.

The details

Residents dine out twice a week both in and out of the city, frequenting Grapevine, Lewisville, Irving and Southlake the most out of surrounding areas, Blust said.

Residents prioritized family-friendly options followed by fine dining, nightlife and bars, food trucks, entertainment-centered eateries, and pet-friendly places, according to survey documents.

Respondents requested Chick-fil-A by name as the top choice when asked about what restaurants they would like to have in Coppell, Blust said. Other choices in order of desire were steakhouses, Italian restaurants, bars and pubs, seafood restaurants, pizza parlors, and healthy options.

Overall, residents are spending more time outside Coppell when dining out, and the same can be said on the retail side, Blust said. The top retail stores respondents said they desired most were supermarkets and grocery stores, clothing stores, specialty retail, home furnishing, department stores, and sporting goods.

Survey results showed residents specifically requested H-E-B, a Texas-based grocery store that just opened in Fort Worth and broke ground on a location in Prosper last spring.

The context

The data collected from this survey will be used to update and develop strategies to help the city pursue new retail and restaurant opportunities in the future. City Council approved a retail attraction consultant to review the data in the fiscal year 2023-24 budget for $75,000, according to city documents.

The online survey measured the following:
  • Dining frequency in Coppell and in cities neighboring Coppell
  • Dining frequency for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Frequency of dining alone and with others
  • Restaurants visited in Coppell and neighboring cities
  • Shopping frequency in Coppell and in neighboring cities
  • Stores visited most often when shopping outside of Coppell
  • Desired stores in Coppell
  • Demographics and attitudes
City staff also received feedback from a 2022 community satisfaction survey, which indicated residents wanted to see more dining options within the city.

Going forward

The survey data collected will be shared with the retail consultant to determine the feasibility of attracting the desired stores and restaurants, Blust said.

“They will be able to give us information on what is feasible to attract, and they also have the industry-specific knowledge and relationship with brands to help us bring them in,” Blust said.

A preproposal meeting was held with interested parties on July 30, and officials will bring the proposal before council for approval at a future meeting, she said.
