The Carroll ISD board of trustees unanimously approved six new high school courses for the upcoming school year.

Each year, district leaders, counselors and teachers consider the course catalog and recommend courses to add or remove for the next school year, according to district documents as part of the Jan. 24 board meeting.

Four of the six new classes being offered are a part of the district’s Career and Technical Education program.

The first new course being added is introduction to culinary arts. The class will be available for students in grades nine-12 without prerequisites. According to district documents, students will learn food production and hospitality skills as well as restaurant management and operations principles.

The district will also be adding practicum of manufacturing (Robotics: Level 4), a course offered only to high school seniors. The course is a capstone level robotics class worth two credits, according to documents. The class requires students to have taken Robotics 2 as a prerequisite.

Business law (Business, Marketing and Finance: Level 2) will be offered to high school juniors and seniors without any prerequisites. Students enrolled will learn about the judicial system, contracts, risk management and business organizations, among other aspects of business law.

Another course being added to the catalog is introduction to welding. The course will teach students “basic welding laboratory practices and operating procedures,” according to district documents. Students in grades nine-12 can enroll without any prerequisites.

Sports Medicine 3 will be offered to high school juniors and seniors who have already taken Sports Medicine 2. The course will give students the opportunity to research and present findings on a sport medicine-related topic as well as continue to serve as athletic trainers, documents stated.

The final new course being added is an AP Capstone research seminar. The class, which is the second course in the program, is offered only to high school seniors and is required for students to receive a diploma in the AP Capstone program, according to district documents. Students will learn research skills as they gather information for an academic paper or presentation.
