John Redmond has filed for the Place 1 seat on Frisco City Council.

The special election to fill the seat will take place Feb. 18. The Place 1 seat is an unexpired term that will be up for election again in May 2018. Council member Bob Allen is vacating the seat to run for Frisco mayor in the May 2016 municipal election.

Redmond said he felt now is the right time for him to run for the council.

“I feel I have always been a pretty good steward,” he said. “Now I want to be a good civil steward here in the city of Frisco.”

Redmond is an entrepreneur and has more than 20 years of corporate experience as a recruiter.

“It’s almost a part of my job description that I have to be a pretty good judge of character and talent,” he said. “As I look at the city of Frisco and how quickly it’s growing and the challenges that I think that we’re going to be facing, I think I’m a pretty natural fit in terms of my temperament and my professional experience that can be leveraged into city government.”

Some issues Redmond said he would like to tackle if elected to the council include balancing the tax rate with the city’s growth and limiting multifamily housing.

Frisco has been adding more mixed-use developments in recent years, but Redmond said the city does not need to add more multifamily housing in these developments or elsewhere in the city.

“I think we got plenty of apartments,” he said. “I understand having entry-level homes, but I’d prefer they be single-family dwellings. I also think we could afford to have more estate-sized lots.”

Redmond has lived in Frisco for more than 11 years.

Other candidates who have filed for Place 1 include Brandon Burden, John Keating, Stacy Plummer, Dan Stricklin, Hal Thomas, Damon Vinci, Stanley Wang and K.D. Warach.
