At tonight’s public hearing, TxDOT officials presented a proposed reconstruction and widening project along Custer Road.
The proposed project would run along Custer Road from US 380 to north of FM 1461. The project would start by expanding Custer Road from two lanes to four lanes and eventually make this portion of Custer Road six lanes.
The proposed four-lane reconstruction and widening would cost approximately $29.5 million, said Mo Bur, director of transportation, planning and development for TxDOT’s Dallas District.
During the initial stage, a 22-foot-wide connector road would be constructed south of where the realigned section of Custer Road connects with the existing FM 1461. This road would connect the realigned Custer Road to the existing FM 2478.
The proposed project would also include dedicated left- and right-turn lanes at various cross streets and 5-foot-wide sidewalks along northbound and southbound Custer Road.
The project would require approximately 36.8 acres of right of way and potentially displace one residential structure, three utility structures and three other miscellaneous structures. No public facilities would be displaced, according to a presentation given at the meeting.
TxDOT is expected to receive environmental clearance within the next month, then work on plan preparations and funding, and finally approve construction plans before project bidding and construction begins.
McKinney City Council Member Chuck Branch spoke at the public hearing and said the city is in support of the proposed project. Council approved this resolution of support at the
May 16 city council meeting.
If approved, construction for the project is expected to begin in fall 2020 with lanes open to traffic by fall 2022.
This project was one of 10 transportation projects included in TxDOT’s
10-year plan to guide transportation development.
