Hays CISD and San Marcos CISD officials announced schools and offices will be closed Jan. 16 due to forecasts showing subzero wind chill temperatures, with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

Some context

Over 14,000 students typically wait for the bus outside, according to an email from HCISD district officials.

"The conditions will not improve until well after any benefit we might see from a delayed school start," the email states.

The details

Although school will not be in session for HCISD Jan. 16, after-school extracurricular activities, practices and games may resume. Students are encouraged to check with their coaches or sponsors regarding their specific activities.

All district basketball games—for boys and girls—for San Marcos High School will resume as scheduled, according to an announcement from the district. All other athletic and extracurricular activities are canceled.

School is expected to be back in session and operating on a normal schedule Jan. 17.

One more thing

HCISD and SMCISD's regularly scheduled school board meetings will still take place Jan. 16 in the evening.
