Representatives from the city of San Marcos and Texas State University met Sept. 20 to officially launch a joint VeoRide bike-share program for residents and students.

Mayor John Thomaides spoke at the event and VeoRide employees provided a demonstration of how to rent and ride the bikes.

The San Marcos City Council first discussed a bike-share program in September 2017; the city and university issued a joint request for proposals in February.

VeoRide began in 2017 at the Purdue Foundry and has already launched in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts and New Hampshire as well as in Austin and at the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Tyler.

The company will initially provide 180 bikes on the Texas State campus and 180 bikes for the city. Rates start at 50 cents per 15 minutes with daily, monthly and membership rates available; Texas State students are eligible for a discount.
