Several road projects are reshaping Central Austin roadways this October, with new construction and ongoing upgrades affecting traffic flow, but expected to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

South Lamar Boulevard mobility program

Project: The city of Austin is adding mobility, safety and connectivity improvements along South Lamar Boulevard between Riverside Drive and Hwy. 290.

Update: Construction along roughly three miles of South Lamar Boulevard from Barton Springs Road to Hwy. 290 will see mobility improvements, including bike and pedestrian facilities, intermittent medians, intersection improvements and upgraded traffic signals.
  • Timeline: Project is currently in final design, and construction is expected to begin early 2026.

US 183 North Mobility Project

Project: The project aims to relieve congestion along 183 North—the 9-mile section of road between MoPac and SH 45—by adding two toll lanes in each direction that will connect to the existing tolls on MoPac and US 183A in Cedar Park.

Update: The southbound Far West Boulevard exit is expected to remain closed through the remainder of 2025.Burnet Road Mobility Program

Project: Includes updated traffic signals, improved crossings, bus stop improvements, trail connections, curb extensions, drainage improvements, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant shared-use paths, raised medians and more on Burnet Road from White Horse Trail to US 183 (C2), Bright Verde Way to MoPac (C3) and US 183 to Bright Verde Way (C4).


Update: Work will begin at Burnet Road and Koenig Lane and continue north to approximately just  south of US 183 (C2). Final design is complete and the project has gone to bid (C3 and C4).

I-35 Capital Express Central Project

Project: The Texas Department of Transportation's $4.5 billion I-35 Capital Express Central project, which broke ground last October, will add two nontolled high-occupancy-vehicle lanes stretching roughly 8 miles from Hwy. 290 to the north down to Hwy. 71 to the south. The I-35 facelift will also see the removal of the upper decks, sink portions of the roadway about 25 feet below ground level and widen the corridor to a range of 17-22 lanes.

Update: The northbound I-35 entrance ramp at 15th Street and the southbound upper deck exit to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard are permanently closed, with limited lane access on the bridge through late 2025 with occasional nighttime closures.South Lamar Boulevard mobility program

Update: Drivers and Bouldin Creek residents can expect road construction and detours as crews build a new roundabout at West Mary Street and Evergreen Avenue, just off Lamar Boulevard in South Austin.
