The city of Austin recently installed bicycle repair stations at area recreation centers, including the Northwest Recreation Center on Northland Drive.[/caption]
The
city of Austin finished installing 24 bicycle fix-it stations throughout the city to promote bicycle commuting and transportation.
Each station includes a repair stand with an air pump and tools, including screwdrivers, wrenches and a tire lever. The goal is to provide cyclists with equipment for handling repairs on the road instead of having to carry tools or walk a bike home for repairs, according to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Repair station sites are primarily located at recreation centers, including the Pickfair Community Center, 10904 Pickfair Drive in Northwest Austin; the Northwest Recreation Center, 2913 Northland Drive; and Gustavo “Gus” Garcia Recreation Center, 1201 E. Rundberg Lane. PARD finished installing the stations in March.
The city's Parks and Recreation and Health and Human Services departments collaborated on the effort after being awarded a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
