On a typical sunny day at Lone Star Grille & Bubba’s Backyard, a water fountain is splashing, a band is performing and children are playing while their parents eat Southern comfort food and drink craft beer on the restaurant’s patio.

But even when the occasional Texas rain hits, guests can still come and have a good time, Managing Partner Rick Redmond said.

“Rain or shine—we are open all year ’round,” Redmond said.

The restaurant offers about 100 seats outside and 250 seats inside. The upstairs bar is open on weekends and on Tuesday evenings for Texas Hold’em poker night.

Redmond opened Lone Star Grille  in May 2014 with the goal of creating a special atmosphere for diners. Redmond, who formerly owned Lone Star Cafe on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin, said he wanted to create an entertainment destination with music, food and events when he opened the eatery.

“This location has the ability to do music, food, large events and parties,” he said. “So I thought it would be a great spot to create that special
atmosphere.”

The restaurant offers live music on Friday and Saturday nights as well as Sunday afternoons. Music genres range from country western and ’80s and ’90s, to zydeco music, which evolved in Louisiana and blends music styles such as rhythm and blues. Zydeco bands play at the weekly crawfish boils in the spring. This summer Lone Star Grille staffers plan to offer regular Texas barbecue cookouts accompanied by music.

“Based on the time of year, we have different events with different kinds of music,” Redmond said. “And we are thinking about bringing in larger acts.”

New to Lone Star Grille is the Oh Hail Barbecue food trailer in the restaurant’s beer garden that offers chicken, sausage, ribs, brisket and pulled pork on Thursdays through Sundays. The food truck is geared toward guests who come out for the atmosphere and music and do not want to order from the restaurant’s regular menu, which includes Southern comfort food, such as chicken tenders, and regional specialties, such as Hill Country Catfish. Healthy dishes, such as kale salad, are also available. Guests can partake in happy hour and rotating food specials, such as free meals for children and two-for-one burgers.
