In unceremonious fashion, Leander annexed the largest single piece of land in the city's history during its May 3 City Council meeting.

The city acquired 1,831 acres—roughly 2.86 square miles—of largely undeveloped land near near FM 1431 and Nameless Road on the southwest edge of Leander. Leander City Council members unanimously approved the voluntary annexation without any discussion.

The property, known as Crystal Falls West, was also rezoned in accordance with the development agreement between the City of Leander and landowner Lookout Partners. The development will be primarily residential with commercial and multi-family zones along the projected major thoroughfares. There is also land set aside for park use, future schools and a fire station.

The land is scheduled to be developed in five phases, according to city development documents, with construction on the first phase—approximately 430 acres— slated to begin in 2014.
