Throughout the state of Texas, local law enforcement agencies will be offering individuals a safe, convenient way to dispose of unused prescription drugs April 27, as well as providing an education opportunity about the potential for abuse of medications, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

What residents need to know

In conjunction with the nationally recognized prescription take-back day, local agencies will be hosting collection sites throughout the region. Drop-offs may take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Some context

There are typically two nationally recognized take-back days annually; however, there are also DEA authorized collector agencies that provide year-round drop-off locations.

Texas has collected over 1.3 million pounds of prescription drugs since the inception of the take-back initiative in 2010, according to DEA data.

Unused or expired medications in the home have been a major safety concern throughout the country, according the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Data from the U.S. poison control call centers indicate that calls in recent years have charted pain medications as the most frequent cause of child fatalities.
