Williamson County Commissioner Russ Boles has been working to get a committee together to evaluate the potential removal of the Confederate statue that sits in front of county courthouse since August, but that committee has been delayed once again.

Boles said the Commissioners Court’s focus is on getting the vaccine rolled out and coronavirus federal aid programs funding to those who need assistance.

When Boles presented the formation of the committee to the Commissioners Court in August, he said his intention was to establish a 15-member committee by September that would evaluate the history and potential options for a relocation, if the court chooses. The formation of the committee does not guarantee the statue will be removed, he said.

It was decided then to postpone the formation of the committee until December and then in December again until the end of January. Now, Boles said he hopes to get the committee on the court’s agenda in February.

“The statue is an important matter to discuss, but the county is in a tough position health-wise at the moment,” Boles told Community Impact Newspaper.
