When Nels and Jan Johnson moved to Sun City in 2011, the couple realized the age-restricted community lacked a pub. They filled that hole opening Wrigley's Pub in the fall of 2013. Now, nearly 10 years later, the neighborhood spot continues to be a gathering place for local residents.

A lifelong dog lover, Nels named the establishment in honor of his late four-legged friend. The restaurant and full bar stays true to its name, welcoming in both dogs and people, and offering customers T-shirts with several different dog-related designs on them.

Wriggley’s serves up classic American bar food, with nachos, salads, hot dogs and sandwiches lining its menu. However, pizza is the most popular dish.

Among the nine different combinations of pizza offered, “Wriggley’s Pizza” and “Meat Lover’s” are the top customer choices.

As a testament to the quality of their pizza, Johnson pointed out a young boy physically licking his plate when he was done with his pizza.

“There’s a very good review on the pizza,” Jan said. “It’s very good here.”

Popular mixed drinks at the bar include margaritas and cosmopolitans, but General Manager Heidi Atkins said people come from out of town for Wriggley’s Mexican martini. Additionally, the restaurant has six beers on tap and serves an assortment of bottled and canned beverages.

"The only thing we ever really rotate out ever is our IPAs,” Atkins said. “Otherwise, people get a little upset.”

The Johnson’s pride themselves on the friendly atmosphere Wriggley’s offers. To make social gatherings more fun, Wriggley’s has a gameroom with shuffleboard and extra seating, Nels said. It hosts several clubs, parties and events.

“Wriggley’s is a destination place,” Jan said. “People will go out in Georgetown with their friends, and then they’ll say, ‘Let's stop at Wriggley's for a nightcap.’ A lot of people call it a ‘Cheers’ bar. People come together and meet their friends.”
