The city of Leander will lease space on Hero Way to host senior adult activities, summer youth camps and other community events starting this April.

The city leased a 14,400-square-foot space at 11880 Hero Way W. for three years with the option to lease for an added two years, according to a March 11 release. The city will hold a ribbon-cutting event April 9 at 1 p.m. for the city facility.

Senior programs will begin April 11 at the new facility, and summer youth programs will begin June 6, according to the city. The city will also expand its indoor programming with the new facility, such as fitness and cooking classes.

Leander City Council may approve naming the facility the "Leander Activity Center" at the March 17 meeting. Council members authorized a lease agreement for the Hero Way West facility Feb. 7.

The Leander Activity Center is a temporary space as the city continues to plan its future senior center and recreation center. Voters approved funding for the facilities in the 2016 bond election, but no construction has begun on these projects due to site selection and other delays. Many of the city's programs and activities are held in the Leander Public Library annex.

The center will be located at 11880 Hero Way West, Ste. 600, Leander, where Hill County Bible Church Leander previously met. City program information can be found at www.leandertx.gov/fun.
