Fall weather is in the air, and the holiday season is right around the corner. From Southwestern University to an event at the Williamson Museum, there is plenty going on around town.

Paideia Connections
Oct. 13


The lecture series at Southwestern University features short talks from two faculty members. This years talked features religion professor Elaine Craddock on “Blessed by the Goddess, Cursed by Men: The Ritual and Social Lives of Transgender Indians” and Emily D. Niemeyer, chemistry and biochemistry professor and holder of the Herbert, and Kate Dishman, science chairperson, on “Fertile Ground for Analysis: Factors Affecting the Production of Antioxidants in Plants”. Afterward, the community is invited to discuss the connections between these two disciplines.

Healing Beyond the Horizon
Oct. 15

Benefiting the Fuankem Lekanyi Memorial Medical Center, the third annual event raises funds for the construction of a center in Atoabechied, Cameroon, that will provide the village and surrounding area with basic medical services as well as provide jobs and educational opportunities. The gala features guest speaker Dr. Steve Wilcox, founder of Design Science, and a silent auction.

The annual event features live music from the Radney Foster Band as well as dinner, a live cattle roundup, live and silent auctions, and music. Proceeds benefit the Georgetown-based nonprofit The Caring Place.

Cattleman’s Ball
Oct. 15

Hosted by The Williamson Museum, the fifth annual fundraiser benefits the museum’s educational programs and includes dinner, wine and beer, and dancing. The event features live and silent auctions, raffles, poker games and this year, honors former Texas Gov. Dan Moody.

Texas Firearms Festival
Oct. 14-16


The third annual festival will showcase the newest guns and gear over three days. The event also features a SWAT team challenge on Sunday where specially trained police officers from Central Texas will compete against each other. Events and some of the proceeds will benefit veterans, active-duty military and law enforcement.
