Applications for the Schertz Young Leaders program opened Aug. 1.

The program is offered to give students the opportunity to learn about their community on a higher level.

Students who participate in the program will be introduced to local government, education, community businesses and the Randolph Air Force Base.

Schertz Young Leaders is open to all high school students that reside in Schertz or are in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District.

The program consists of six mandatory school-day sessions, which begin at 9:15 a.m. and end around 3:15 p.m.

According to the city website, each session will be focused on a particular topic related to the community.

Participants are also required to attend one Schertz City Council meeting, one volunteer event and one SCUCISD board of trustees meeting. At the end of the program, a graduation ceremony will be held.

Applications are due by Sept. 15, and the program begins in October.
