These funds will support a portion of construction costs as the new 850,000-square-foot terminal enters Phase 4 of construction.
What you need to know
According to a news release, funds will be used for mass excavation, drilled piers and design assist work for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and baggage handling systems.
“This federal investment is an important win for San Antonio,” said Erik Walsh, San Antonio city manager. “It strengthens our airport infrastructure, creates local jobs and ensures that [SA Airport] will continue to meet the growing needs of our city. The improvements under way at [SA Airport] are vital to the future of our region and will benefit generations of travelers.”
The terminal development project is estimated to create an estimated 16,000 jobs, supporting workforce development across a range of industries, such as skilled trades, engineering and customer service. The development project will also directly benefit the local economy by offering opportunities for local contractors, subcontractors and vendors.
According to a news release, the terminal development is expected to have a $2.8 billion economic impact on the local economy.
The framework
According to the SA Airport’s master plan, by 2030, an average of 13 million passengers are estimated to travel through San Antonio a year. To accommodate this growth, the new terminal will add an additional 17 gates by mid-2028, with a larger gate hold rooms for passengers, 410,000-square-feet of new concession space, roadway improvements, an extended runway and a modern federal inspection station for expanded international travel.
“We are grateful to the FAA for their continued partnership and commitment to improving our airport infrastructure,” said Jesus Saenz, director of airports for San Antonio Airport System. “This grant moves us one step closer to delivering a modern, world-class terminal that will also be a significant economic driver for our region.”
Projected to be 30% larger than both current terminals combined, the new terminal’s construction is funded through a mix of revenue bonds, federal grants and airport revenue.
A closer look
Aesthetically, the terminal will reflect San Antonio’s unique culture and environment. This includes developing a riparian paseo that showcases local flora as an indoor-outdoor transition space, a water feature reminiscent of the River Walk, a stage for live music, a mercado designed to invoke the historic market square and an expanded USO for military personnel.
Design vision themes:
- Integrate natural colors, textures and landscape of the San Antonio region, including water, native landscaping and trees
- Create an environmental balance and serene peaceful spaces with vibrant and colorful spaces that embody the welcoming culture of San Antonio and the exuberant spirit of Fiesta
- The airport design should connect to nature and provide an abundance of natural light and views to the outdoors at every opportunity
- Incorporate regionally sourced stone, material and art referencing San Antonio’s culture and history of craftsmanship
