Starting Jan. 3 through March, two sections of Broadway Street in downtown San Antonio will be closed for roadway reconstruction.

The background

According to a Jan. 2 news release, the following portions of Broadway are closed:
  • Broadway from Pecan Street to Fourth Street, including the intersections of Broadway and Pecan streets as well as Broadway and Third streets
  • Broadway from McCullough Avenue to Sixth Street, including the intersection of Broadway and McCullough
The release states three intersections of Broadway at Fourth and Sixth streets as well as at Brooklyn Avenue will stay open to eastbound and westbound traffic.

The previous phase of road closures reopened to traffic before the holiday season, city representatives said, including Broadway from Brooklyn Avenue to Sixth Street and Broadway from McCullough to Fourth Street. Sidewalk work continues in these areas, the release states.

Two parts of Ninth Street reopened Dec. 13—Broadway to North Alamo Street and Broadway to Avenue B. Additionally, new Avenue B/North Alamo bicycle lanes were unveiled Dec. 5.

What else?

City officials said the new phased closures are coordinated to allow motorists and pedestrians access to all businesses along and near the lower Broadway corridor, either via Broadway or its side streets.

The Broadway Street initiative is funded by the city’s 2017 bond, and is scheduled for completion this summer.
