Walker Ranch Senior Center will be the name of the city of San Antonio’s new District 9 senior/community center that is under construction at 12603 West Ave.

City Council on Feb. 17 approved the name based on a recommendation from the city’s District 9 Senior Citizen Advisory Committee.

Scheduled to open in June, the $14.2 million facility is being funded by the city’s voter-approved 2017 bond.

The center will include wraparound senior services focused on health and wellness, case management, nutrition, exercise, social and cultural activities, and transportation for older adults who live within a 5-mile radius of the facility.

The center will also contain a City Council District 9 satellite office for constituent services, and it will be located next to an entrance to Walker Ranch Park, where a public parking lot will serve visitors to either or both destinations.

The city estimates about 500 older adults will attend the new center on a daily basis.

City officials said the District 9 center will also be accessible via a shared-use path that connects Walker Ranch Park and nearby Hardberger Park.

City officials said applying the Walker Ranch name on the new District 9 community center has precedence because the names of other city senior centers are based on adjacent parkland in those areas.
