San Antonio, Hollywood Park and Shavano Park's Independence Day celebrations highlight happenings in and around San Antonio on this Fourth of July weekend.

The Ecumenical Center is hosing “Art Heals Hearts,” an exhibit of works by San Antonio area artists meant to showcase how art helps heal people with mental health challenges. Proceeds from art sold during the exhibit will benefit The Ecumenical Center’s therapeutic arts programming. Guests are asked to call to schedule a viewing time.

Big Texas Comicon and Centro San Antonio will present Comicon In The Alley 2, a family-friendly event that brings all things seen in a pop culture convention together in a smaller setting at Peacock Alley downtown. There will be vendors, artists, live art, face painting for the kids, food, drinks, a DJ, and a costume contest.

The San Antonio Museum of Art will host a summer exhibit, “Still Brewing Art,” through Sept. 3. The exhibition will celebrate San Antonio’s beer-brewing history and the SAMA’s legacy as the first and only accredited U.S. art museum housed in a historic brewery. Visitors will get to view more than 50 objects, including large-format Belle Époque beer advertising posters, rare pre-Prohibition Lone Star Brewery artifacts and memorabilia, and photos that trace the history of the SAMA and beer culture in San Antonio.

The city of Shavano Park invites residents to its annual Independence Day celebration at City Hall. Festivities will include live music, a patriotic baking contest, free food for the first 300 guests, a mini-water park, a mini-parade, kids’ activities, a petting zoo and pony rides. There will also be an 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting and dedication of the City Hall nature trail in the memory of Lisa Starr Rosenstein, whose parents are Shavano Park residents. Rosenstein died in a hit-and-run car crash May 2, 2021. The parents sponsored a 5K race in 2022 in Shavano Park in their daughter’s memory and donated $10,000 toward nature trail improvements. Additionally, there will also be a noon formal flag retirement ceremony on site for anyone who has a flag they want to properly dispose.

July 1

San Antonio Animal Care Services will hosting two free pet vaccination and microchipping events in partnership with the Animal Defense League and Protect Your Pet veterinary services. All services are offered for city of San Antonio residents only on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a limit of 100 pets served and three pets per household. Pet owners are asked to bring a current picture ID for address verification. Each pet receiving services must be microchipped or will receive a microchip at the time of service. All canines must remain on a leash or in a carrier. All felines must remain in a carrier with one adult per carrier or two kittens per carrier.



July 1-Aug. 6



Magik Theatre will present performances of “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical,” based on the bestselling novel by San Antonio native Rick Riordan. This tale follows 12-year-old demigod Percy Jackson as he descends to the underworld and back on the most dangerous quest of his life. Young attendees are also invited to participate in the Magik Theatre’s weeklong summer camps in July inspired by “The Lightning Thief.”

Cornerstone Church will host an Independence Day celebration for the community, including various family-friendly games, inflatables for children and a performance by Christian music artist Zach Williams. The event will wrap up with a fireworks display. Guests may bring blankets, lawn chairs, sunscreen and dry clothes if they plan to take part in water games.

San Antonio’s Armed Forces River Parade will feature patriotically decorated floats carrying members of all U.S. armed forces branches as well as businesses and nonprofits that support active and retired military members.

Hollywood Park Community Association invites residents to the town’s annual Fourth of July parade, which will start at City Hall. The parade route will wind down Sequoia, Meadowbrook and Fleetwood drives; Realto Circle; and El Portal Drive, finishing at Voigt Park, where residents may enjoy swimming, refreshments and other activities.
