Richardson City Council names deputy as new city manager

The mayor and City Council gave Magner a standing ovation once the motion to appoint him was passed. Each member of the council, as well as the mayor, spoke about their own experiences with Magner, expressing confidence in him for the role.

“I can't think of a better person to lead our city after Dan retires,” Council Member Ken Hutchenrider said. “[Magner has] made us proud in many, many ways.”

The council and mayor considered conducting a nationwide search for a replacement city manager, but believed Magner was the best fit for the job, Council Member Joe Corcoran said.

Council members commended Magner’s attention to detail, commitment to the city and strong communication skills.

Johnson has served as city manager since 2012, after working for the cities of Carrollton and Sherman.

Voelker expressed his gratitude to Johnson for his service.

“A relationship between a mayor, especially, and a city manager is an amazing one,” Voelker said. “Dan and I have been through a lot. I am so excited that with the passage of tonight's action that the baton will be handed off. We will not miss a step.”

Johnson will officially step down on March 1, 2022, at which time Magner will step in.
