The July 1 episode of The Houston Breakdown gives an update on Texas Central’s plans to develop a high-speed railway following a state Supreme Court decision; the city’s journey to make Houston a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup; and more news from across the metroplex.

Multiple matches will be played at NRG Stadium

In 2018, FIFA announced that the “United 2026” World Cup would be hosted in North America. For the first time in the tournament’s history, an expanded field of 48 teams will play matches held in 3 different countries. It was revealed earlier this month that Houston will host multiple matches alongside 15 other American, Canadian and Mexican cities.

Chris Canetti, President of the Houston World Cup Bid Committee, says Houston’s diversity and accessibility, as well as NRG Stadium’s resources and the city’s overall sports culture, were key points in the city's pitch to FIFA.
