Cedar Park Public Library goers no longer have to worry about overdue fees.

City Council voted unanimously Dec. 13 to amend the city’s code of ordinances to remove overdue library fees.

Council member Heather Jefts said during a Nov. 15 meeting that library fees are becoming less common across the country.

“It seems like more of a national trend away from that,” Jefts said. “Some of the research I read says that it’s either neutral or improved returning of materials after fines have been eliminated and a big increase in users.”

Fees for lost, damaged and unreturned items are still in effect. Previously, overdue fees ranged from $0.25 per day to $2 per day, depending on the item checked out.

The changes come after the library staff reviewed services earlier this year and compared Cedar Park’s library to those in other comparable cities. During a Nov. 15  presentation, Library Director Julia Mitschke said libraries in Georgetown, Pflugerville and Flower Mound had removed overdue fees.
