Central Health is the health care district for Travis County thatwas created by voters in 2004 to provide health services to low-income residents. The entity adopts a tax rate to raise revenues formaintenance and operations of the district and its health programs.

Central Health’s programs include its nonprofit HMO called Sendero Health Plans and CommUnityCare, its system of safety net primary care clinics.

Central Health differs from Austin Public Health, which is the health department for the city of Austin and Travis County, in that APH does not levy taxes. APH services include education, immunizations, health screenings and nutritional support programs.
