As students enrolled in public schools across Texas wrap up end-of-year exams, school districts are preparing to receive their accountability ratings from the state, which are set to come out in August. Districts in Texas will receive ratings this year using a new system that gives grades on an A-F scale. The system takes several factors into account, including standardized test results and closing academic achievement gaps. It replaces a pass/fail system where campuses were rated as Met Standard, Met Alternate Standard or Improvement Required. The A-F system was originally set to go into effect in 2017, but its implementation was delayed after school boards across the state—including Cy-Fair ISD—criticized it for oversimplifying achievements and programs at the campus level. The system was altered in the 2017 Texas legislative session, including a change that allows districts to develop their own rating systems that can be used in conjunction with state ratings.
