Ongoing efforts to pave the way for a traffic signal on a Southwest Austin road will likely be postponed this week.
Escondera Condominiums Association board member Art Bedrosian said residents in his neighborhood want the feature added at Terravista Drive and Southwest Parkway as soon as possible.
“We’d like to get a traffic light before people get killed,” he said.
There is already significant traffic on the road, he said, and planned developments in the area such as the
Lantana IV mixed-use project, which will include a
preschool opening in fall 2017, necessitate a focus on safety. Bedrosian said he would also like to see increased police presence along Southwest Parkway to enforce speed limits.
City staff has requested to postpone an Austin City Council
agenda item for Thursday concerning rezoning and the traffic light because it has not been heard by the Planning Commission.
The intersection lies within Austin City Council District 8. Council Member Ellen Troxclair and her office have been working on identifying funding options to complete the light, she said in an email. The developer of the project is contributing $84,500, but a traffic light is estimated to cost $225,000, Troxclair said.
“The city has identified the intersection at Southwest Parkway and Terravista as number 20 on the list of intersections in need of a light, and I am hopeful that our efforts will help to elevate the issue,” she said.
The commission has not made a recommendation on the project but plans to take up the zoning request at its Feb. 14 meeting, according to city staff.
