Development Updates1. The City of Katy’s new City Hall is scheduled to open at 10 a.m. April 22. The new three-story structure is adjacent to the current city offices on Avenue C. The 33,000-square-foot building cost $7.5 million and will house all city staff and numerous departments. Decorations include a tower atop the building with three large clocks facing south, west and east.

2. A Kroger store at 1712 Spring Green Blvd., opened its doors Oct. 9 in a development by NewQuest Properties. The shopping center has other business that opened in January including Russo’s New York Pizzeria, SH Salon, Vogue Cleaners and Postal + Copy Center. A Massage Envy opened in December. Other businesses in the center include Subway, Tender Touch Nails and a Kumon learning center.

3. Construction was completed on the Memorial Hermann Katy East Tower late 2015, and the new facility opened on Jan. 7. The six-story, 230,000 square foot addition to the Katy medical campus has many new services and 64-licensed beds for patients in individual rooms. There is also a dormitory with a kitchen and showers for the pilots and crews manning the hospital’s Life Flight helicopter.

4. Elite volleyball center opened in September. The athletic training center is located near Katy Mills and also offers basketball and fencing.

5. Katy ISD will break ground on its second sports stadium Feb. 5. The stadium, at 5105 Franz Road, will be designed to seat 12,000 people and will cost about $57 million. Space on the second floor will also be built out for administrative offices.

6. The Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center in Katy opened in June. The project and land for the facility cost $19.1 million. Located off of the Grand Parkway and FM 1093, the center features an emergency room, lab services and adult and pediatric primary care.

7. Parkside Bella Terra apartments and townhomes started construction in March of 2015 and was completed in January. The luxury apartments, developed and managed by Oden Hughes, add up to 352 units and features include a pet park, a car wash, a pool, a theater room, gym and cafe.

8. Cane Island, the city of Katy’s first master-planned community, opened and had its first occupants last September. A grand opening celebration is planned for March 5 and 6 with 14 model homes open for tour. The community has many amenities such as a fitness center, swimming pool, cafe and and gym.

9. Area residents will be able to swim and float at the Typhoon Texas water park at Katy Mills this summer. The water park is scheduled to open May 27 and will have a 1,500-foot ‘lazy river,’ multiple water slides, a wave pool and five different food vendor areas. The water park is on a 25-acre segment of a larger property at Katy Mills Circle and Star Lane. The remaining 18 acres may be developed in 2017.

10. A new $12 million Katy YMCA is planned as a second YMCA location for the area. The building will be two stories and 41,000 square feet. The building is estimated to be completed late in 2016. Ground could be broken for the building as soon as February. The YMCA has raised $1.27 million for the new building, with a goal of raising $2.4 million.

11. The CNG 4 America compressed natural gas station opened July 7 at 24985 I-10. The station allows vehicles that have been converted to clean natural gas power to purchase fuel along the main trucking route through the  Houston region.

12. The Highland Knolls area now has a new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market after the store opened its doors Jan. 13. The Neighborhood Market is a smaller version of Wal-Mart with less products and 41,000 square feet or smaller.
