Because of the rapid growth experienced within McKinney over the last 10 years, city staffers have begun updating the city’s comprehensive plan. The plan was last updated in 2004. City staff uses its comprehensive plan to help manage growth and development within the city. It is a guiding force for officials but features no zoning or ordinance specifications. The last update occurred when the city’s population was roughly 86,000; today, the city’s population has grown to more than 155,000 people. City officials began garnering resident input in September with two community summits on Sept. 16 and Sept. 17 and a community charrette on Oct. 24. More than 160 residents participated in the events sharing their feedback and hearing presentations from city planners, designers and architects about the future growth of the city. This month, city staff will assimilate information gathered from residents and will present it to the McKinney City Council in December. For residents who would like to participate or to see previous meeting details, presentations, maps, posters and exercises have been posted on the comprehensive plan’s website at www.onemckinney2040.com.
