UPDATED at 9:08 a.m. to correct information about RideScout's app
Several transportation organizations are rolling out new or extended services in time for the South by Southwest Music and Media Conferenceon March 1322.
RIDESCOUT
Austin-based RideScout unveiledan update March 9 to its smartphone application, which shows users available transportation options nearby. This year it has partnered with Capital Metro to offer bus and rail fare purchases through the app as well as real-time arrival information for transit options, CEO and co-founder Joseph Kopser said.
RideScout uses the GPS location of a user to provide a list of available transportation services nearby, including taxis, public transit andbiking. The update will also show users the different passes available to use a particular public transit option and allow them to purchase passes. Users will initially need to download Capital Metros app to use this feature, but Kopser said that could change.
Were the first city in the U.S. where the transit agency in partnership with their mobile ticketing provider said to open up sales of mobile tickets to other venues so in real time users can find out [transit] information, he said.
RideScouts update also coincides with Capital Metros Feb. 25 launch of real-time arrival information for all of its buses.
People think thats no big deal, but minutes matter, especially when its 110 degrees or when its raining, Kopser said.
Kopser said this update is the first of four or five the company anticipates for 2015. He said he is not against people driving but wants them to be aware of all their options.
To change way people move around the city requires small incremental steps, he said.
UBER
Ridesharing provider Uber announced March 6 the launch of uberPOOL for SXSW. This service allows riders to share a ride and split the cost with another rider heading in the same direction, potentially saving users money.
During March 1113, Uber is providing a free roundtrip ride, valued up to $20 each way, to and from work between 710 a.m. and 47 p.m.
Ubers first appearance at SXSW was in 2011 when it offered pop-up pedicab rides.
LYFT and PAYPAL
Ridesharing provider Lyft and PayPal have teamed up for Magic Mode. This allows Lyft users to request a ride through the app in Magic Mode for a chance to be picked up in a Ferrari F430 Spider, a 1963 Bentley, a Tesla Model S or any other noteworthy vehicles available.
Users can now pay for rides using PayPal in the Lyft app for the iOS platformthrough a feature calledOne Touch. This allows users to pay without having to retype logins or credit card information.Lyft users will receive $5 off their first Magic Mode ride if paying through PayPal.
