Creativity encouraged at unconventional gym

All age ranges and personality types have embraced the free-for-all at Hot Lava Obstacle Course, an indoor gym that opened June 15 on Burnet Road.

"A lot of late-20s, early 30-somethings who have desk jobs or just finished college will come here, and it's almost like they move through a fog and a playful, youthful spirit emerges," said Ben Broussard, who operates the business alongside his wife, Kate.

Traditional workout equipment has been replaced with a spring floor, cargo nets, a ring forest and a foam lava pit, among other obstacles. The concept has proven particularly popular with rock climbers, CrossFit enthusiasts, gymnasts and dancers, Broussard said. "American Ninja Warrior" trainees also enjoy the obstacles, he said.

"They come here with free time to play or come between training to try things they've learned," he said.

Broussard started a superhero study group from 5–10 p.m. each Wednesday, during which time people are invited to contrive new and interesting ways to make the most of the gym's equipment.

"It's kind of like ninja training," Broussard said.
