Cancer patients, survivors, and staff affiliated with MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Katy plan to enlighten the community about breast cancer Oct. 5. The facility will host its annual Pink Lighting event from 7-9 p.m. at Heritage Square in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch.
"It is an honor for us to host this unique community event, celebrating survivorship, raising awareness for the single most common cancer in women and encouraging proper screenings," said Nikesh Jasani, M.D., medical director for the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Katy and a general oncologist. "The Katy Pink Lighting event gives us the opportunity to recognize those in the midst of – or looking back on – their cancer journey, and to share vital information on prevention, screenings and resources."
Members of the community are encouraged to come to the pink-lit square to "spread the light" with pink glow necklaces, educational materials and upbeat live music, according to a statement from MD Anderson.
The event coincides with the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is an opportunity for those suffering from the disease to meet with survivors, other patients, and the center's support group Breast Friends.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 232,340 new breast cancer cases will have been diagnosed in women in the United States, and about 2,240 new breast cancer cases in men by year's end.
