Katy City Council unanimously approved the appointment of Bryon Woytek as the city’s next police chief.

During the Dec. 9 meeting, Woytek said he is honored to serve such a supporting city as he achieves his lifelong dream of becoming a police chief.

“The city of Katy is my home and my top priority,” he said. “This is where I started my career, and this is where I’ll end it. Thank you for the amazing opportunity to continue to serve the citizens of Katy and thank you for this honor to continue to serve the city of Katy in this role.”

Council members, including Dan Smith, congratulated Woytek as he officially earned the title after serving in the interim since August.

“Your career distinguishes you as someone who is uniquely equipped to lead this amazing group of men and women, and they support you, which I think is clear today,” Smith said. “I’m excited to watch you continue to grow and lead us into the future.”

A new police chief will be named at the Dec. 9 Katy City Council meeting.

The overview

Katy City Council will consider the appointment of Bryon Woytek as the city’s next police chief following former Police Chief J. Noe Diaz’s move to replace former Houston Police Chief Troy Finner in August. Diaz was appointed to chief in March 2019.

Woytek has served as interim chief since Aug. 12.


The details

According to Woytek’s LinkedIn profile, he has served the Katy Police Department for 30 years, beginning on patrol in 1984. Since 2009, he served as the patrol captain but has also held roles including:
  • Patrol sergeant
  • K-9 handler
He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy for police management and leadership.

City Council will vote on the ordinance and administer the oath of office at its Dec. 9 meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Katy City Hall, located at 901 Ave. C, Katy, according to agenda documents.
