The Amy's Ice Creams store at retail center Austinville 78750 opened its doors Sept. 20.
Steve Simmons, who owns the business with wife, Amy, said Austinville 78750 has been a dream in the making for seven years since the duo first bought the land. The center is located at 13265 N. US 183, just south of Anderson Mill Road and near Main Event.
The ice cream shop is 1,200 square feet with seating and an outdoor playscape designed with the help of the couple's 9-year-old son.
Simmons said they purposefully built the facility and playscape around the large heritage oak trees that provide shade for the outdoor area. A silo will collect rainwater to help water the grounds.
Adjacent to Amy's is a 2,500-square-foot Phil's Ice House that will open Oct. 1. The picnic-like tables inside are made with cedar from trees on the Simmons' ranch.
Austinville 78750 will also have a Baked by Amy's, the business's first bakery that will create custom cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and other baked goods. That business is still under construction, but when completed, Simmons said it will look like an Italian kitchen, and customers will be able to see staff creating the baked goods. He said it is an exciting venture for his wife.
"She gets to reinvent herself again," he said.
Also located inside Austinville 78750 is the indoor skydiving facility iFLY that opened in January. Simmons said TVs inside Amy's will air a live feed of the skydiving tube. He said the businesses will all enhance the others. Patrons of iFLY can enjoy a burger and beer afterward, and mothers can pick up cakes for parties at iFLY, Simmons said.
"It's a synergy of businesses working together," he said.
Next door, renovation is underway on a 6,000-square-foot building that will have several retail spots and one space for a restaurant. Simmons said so far Dirty Dog, a self-serve dog wash and grooming business, has confirmed it will occupy one of the spaces.
Amy's and Phil's are just two of the numerous homegrown businesses that have recently opened locations in Northwest Austin. Third Base sports bar opened in the nearby Anderson Arbor shopping center June 5.
P. Terry's opened its first North Austin location June 27 on MoPac near Parmer Lane. P. Terry's is planning a Northwest Austin location on US 183 near Duval Road that will open in early 2014.
