Jack D. Johnson, the first superintendent of the Carroll Independent School District and a leader who took on many other roles during his 30 years of service, has died. He was 85.
Johnson died Thursday, and a service was Saturday.
He was the first principal in the district in 1957, and became superintendent in 1959. Johnson also was a teacher and coach, and retired in 1987. He was one of the inaugural members of the Dragon Athletic Hall of Honor, President of the Texas Association of School Administrators and was active in the University Interscholastic League.
Jack D. Johnson Elementary on North Carroll Avenue was named after him.
A Westminster, Texas native, Johnson was born July 12, 1927. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War after he graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas.
He was married to Modean Johnson for 57 years. Johnson is survived by his daughter, Sheila Croy and husband Larry; son, Tommy Johnson and wife, Renee'; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
