The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County is in the midst of formulating a voter referendum—which residents could consider as soon as November—to decide how to proceed with the agency's General Mobility Fund program.

These funds have paid for several road projects completed in Cy-Fair during the last year, including the widening of Perry Road from FM 1960 to Hwy. 249 and Cypress Rosehill Road from Cypress Needle to Manor Bend. METRO is asking for public input on the fund because a voter referendum must be held before 2014 to determine whether to continue using the money for mobility projects or for transit.

The General Mobility Fund is paid for by a quarter of the 1-percent sales tax METRO collects, and has been used to construct and maintain streets, bridges, drainage systems, sidewalks and grade separations for more than 20 years. The program has funded more than $2 billion worth of transportation projects in its service area, which includes the city of Houston, unincorporated Harris County and 14 other municipalities within the county.

According to METRO, community meetings will be held before July 21, ballot proposal items will be presented July 26, a ballot proposition will be approved Aug. 17 and it could be on the Nov. 6 ballot for voter approval.

Public meetings will take place on the following dates from 6-8 p.m.:

Monday, July 16

Ripley House Neighborhood Center

4410 Navigation, Houston

Wednesday, July 18

Houston Community College-Northwest Campus

1010 W. Sam Houston Parkway N., Houston
