Pflugerville ISD will not face major budget cuts this year, Superintendent Charles Dupre said at a community forum April 3.

In fact, the board of trustees will consider a pay increase for all employees at a board workshop meeting April 4.

"The good news is the cuts we did last year are going to sustain us through the next year," Dupre said.

The board will vote at a workshop meeting April 4 to increase pay by $500 for all teachers, 1 percent for non-teacher employees and to cover an increase in medical insurance contributions up to $600,000, according to the board's agenda.

All told, the increases would cost the district about $1.9 million.

PISD was forced to cut about $8 million from its budget last year as part of statewide cuts to education spending.

Under Senate Bill 1, passed during last year's legislative session, school districts received an across-the-board cut of about 6 percent for the 2011–12 school year. For the 2012–13 school year, wealthier districts will see a larger cut than lower-funded districts such as PISD. PISD is one of the lower-funded school districts in the state on a per-student basis.
