Planting to withstand summer

Spring is planting season for many gardeners. Despite hot Texas summers, threats of drought and rocky soil, hundreds of plants can flourish in the region.

The best greenery for a particular yard is unique to the gardener. For those interested in growing vegetables, Sheila Endres of the Leander Garden Club, which offers monthly gardening tips and events, recommends planting eggplants, peppers, okra and other edibles that can withstand warm temperatures.

"Plants that do well in the rocky, hot climate around the Mediterranean will do well at least until mid-July here," she said. "If the heat or drought get your crops early this summer, don't despair. Fall gives us a second chance here in Texas."
