Steampunk Saloon on West Sixth Street rebranded as Buford's Backyard Beer Garden in June.

The restaurant opened as Steampunk Saloon in 2015, incorporating elements of the science fiction subgenre and combining a Prohibition 1920s-era theme with industrial aesthetics.

"We received a lot of negative feedback from the 'steampunk community,'" co-owner Clay Woody said in an email when asked about the rebranding.

After discovering the building, located at 700 W. Sixth St., was built by Rev. Buford Jackson Smith, Woody and the other owners decided to change the name to Buford's.

"We felt this was better for the long haul," he said. "I still have trouble saying Buford's instead of Steampunk, but again we thought it would be better over the long run."

Woody said the overall vision of the restaurant has not changed, but the team plans to open the upstairs space in the next few months and build a roof over the beer garden. 512-545-5505.
