Urban Axes, a 7,000-square-foot facility where people can bring their own beer and wine and swing axes into bullseyes, opened Sept. 18 at 812 Airport Blvd., Austin.

The Philadelphia-based business allows people age 21 and over to join leagues, play during open walk-in sessions or participate in two-and-a-half-hour group events with trained coaches. League players compete against others to see who can throw their ax closest to the bullseye.

Austin General Manager Earl Ball said only two people are in the arena at one time, and alcohol is not allowed inside of the arena. He said staff monitors customers to ensure safety. The axes, Ball said, weigh about 1.5 pounds and are 14-16 inches long. He said Urban Axes is much like a bowling alley or a skeeball facility and will cater to bachelor or bachelorette parties, corporate events and groups of friends.
