Lakeway transportation bond for improvements, new road passes

Unofficial results from Travis County election officials show Lakeway Proposition A passing with 66.83% of the vote as of 11:55 Nov. 8.

Lakeway Communications Director Jarrod Wise said City Council would likely decide how transportation projects would be split up starting in January.

Several of the larger projects include improvements to the culverts on Lakeway Drive as well as road resurfacing for Lakeway Drive and Lohmans Crossing. A detailed report of all the construction projects and cost analysis can be found on the city of Lakeway's transportation updates.

Even though council has several years before it has to decide how to use the bonds, Wise said it would want to get started on the bigger projects as soon as possible, especially with resurfacing, he said.

"We may not even have to use the full amount [$17.5 million] of the bond for transportation improvements," Wise said.

Updated results from Travis County show residents are still voting in favor of Lakeway Proposition A. Just over 66% of the 8,403 residents are voting for the transportation bond that will be used for improvements to streets, sidewalks, pathways, and bike and pedestrian systems.

Unofficial results from the Travis County clerk show residents of Lakeway are voting for Lakeway Proposition A totaling $17.5 million in the November midterm election.

An ordinance to approve a transportation bond election was approved by Lakeway City Council during its Aug. 15 regular meeting.

The bond will be used for improvements to streets, sidewalks, pathways, and bike and pedestrian systems.

In terms of fiscal impact, former Lakeway City Manager Julie Oakley said the debt service incurred by the bond will be $1.18 million annually. This will also increase the city’s interest and sinking tax rate by $0.0114.

The increase in the I&S tax rate would increase the tax levy, or tax amount, the average homeowner in Lakeway pays by an estimated $6.58 per month, she said.

During the meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Gretchen Vance pointed out although the voters may authorize the use of the $17.5 million bond, the city does not have to issue the funds.

According to Oakley, the bond can also be issued in stages. For example, the city may choose to use $6 million for one project and then use another $6 million months later for another part of the project, she said.
